The move, confirmed in an updated Windows Release Health Dashboard entry, affects all Home and Pro edition devices not managed by IT departments. Starting this week, Microsoft expanded its machine learning-based intelligent rollout to all eligible unmanaged devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions. These devices will automatically receive Windows 11, version 25H2, also known as the Windows 11 2025 Update, without any manual action required from the end user. The key driver behind this push is lifecycle support. Windows 11, version 24H2, is scheduled to reach end of support on October 13, 2026, approximately six months away. Microsoft explicitly warns that devices remaining on 24H2 “will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. How the Update Works Windows 11, version 25H2 and 24H2 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. The upgrade is delivered via a lightweight “enablement package,” a master switch that’s less than 200 KB and simply activates dormant 25H2 features already present in the latest cumulative updates for 24H2. This design significantly reduces update downtime, requiring only a single restart to complete the transition. Windows Update silently downloads the enablement package in the background. Users are not required to take any action but retain the ability to choose their restart timing or postpone the update for a limited period using Windows Update’s active hours and pause features. The forced upgrade applies exclusively to unmanaged devices that receive updates directly from Windows Update or WSUS and are not governed by enterprise IT policies. Devices enrolled in organizational management tools such as Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Intune, or Windows Autopatch remain under administrator control and are not subject to the automatic push. Earlier phases of the rollout already covered Windows 11 versions 23H2, 22H2, and 21H1, which had reached end-of-life status. The expansion to 24H2 devices signals that Microsoft is systematically closing the gap across its entire supported consumer device base. Users can verify their eligibility by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and selecting “Check for updates”. If ready, the option to “Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2” will appear. While postponement is available, security-conscious users are advised to accept the upgrade promptly to maintain full patch coverage and system integrity.
