Bitdefender is cheaper than Norton and TotalAV, but that comes with the caveat of supporting only one device connection on the most affordable plan. However, this well-established antivirus provider showed excellent results during in-house testing – its real-time full scan detection rates both were above 80%. Independent labs also highlight the provider’s exceptional protection capabilities.
Why I picked Bitdefender
Good in-house testing results. The provider showed good performance in our latest tests for our Bitdefender review. A full system scan caught 89% of malware, detecting 133 out of 150 malware samples we planted. Real-time protection detection rate dropped to 80%, but it’s still the best result on my list.
Bitdefender also scored high in independent lab tests. AV-TEST’s December 2025 report gave Bitdefender highest scores across all three categories (protection, performance, and usability. This means that it successfully stopped various kinds of malware. AV-Comparatives’ September 2025 report also ranked Bitdefender among the best antiviruses, awarding it with the Advanced Plus title.
The downsides of Bitdefender. Bitdefender offers capable protection but doesn’t come without drawbacks. Its full scans are slow, stretching to over 1 hour and 38 minutes, and CPU usage can fluctuate heavily, at times reaching 100%. Additionally, the cheapest plan only covers 1 device. In comparison, TotalAV’s entry plan covers up to 3 devices.

Good testing results. TotalAV showed mixed results in my most recent malware tests. The full system scan caught 103 out of 150 malware samples, achieving a 66% detection rate. However, TotalAV tests with real-time protection enabled showed worse results, detecting only 55 out of 150 threats.
As for independent lab ranking, since December 2024, TotalAV garnered perfect 6/6 scores in all three categories (protection, performance, usability) in AV-TEST’s evaluations. In the latest December 2025 report, it yet again scored a perfect 6/6 in all three categories. Hands-on testing results. I ran a few real-world tests on Malwarebytes, and the results were mixed. Real-time protection failed to stop any of the 150 live malware samples in a controlled environment. However, the full system scan performed much better, detecting 59.33% of planted malware samples. The full scan took slightly over 39 minutes, which is relatively fast.
In terms of independent lab test scores, Malwarebytes gained excellent scores from AV-TEST. However, the last time it was tested was for an October 2023 report. As for the AV-Comparatives Real-World Test performed in September 2025, Malwarebytes performed decently, successfully blocking 99.88% threats. However, it struggled with false positives. It had 28 of them (one of the highest numbers out of all tested providers).
Despite mixed in-house and independent lab testing results, Malwarebytes offers flexible pricing and a few extra features, making it a good choice for users appreciating good value. You pay for the number of devices you want to cover and get extras such as a VPN, safe web browsing, data breach notifications, and scam and ad blocker.
The downsides of Malwarebytes. During in-house testing, Malwarebytes failed to perform real-time malware detection and scored high detecting false positives in AV-Comparatives evaluations. What’s more, it can be pretty heavy on your devices, as its CPU usage can spike up to 100%.

As for independent lab testing, during the latest September 2025 AV-TEST evaluation, the provider scored a perfect 6 out of 6 points across two categories: Protection and Performance. It scores slightly lower, 5.5/5 in Usability due to false detection rates. Additionally, the latest September 2025 report from AV-Comparatives gave ESET NOD32 the ADVANCED+ award, reflecting its excellent malware protection and low false positive rate.

Why I picked McAfee Total Protection
Comprehensive security. McAfee showed one of the best and one of the worst results during my tests. Its real-time protection struggled big time, failing to block any of the 150 malware samples. On the other hand, the full scan was impressive as it detected 92.67% of planted malware while testing McAfee.
That said, independent test labs showed more promising results. In December 2025, AV-TEST gave McAfee top scores in protection, performance, and usability – just like in its August test. On the other hand, AV-Comparatives gave McAfee only the TESTED (lowest) award for malware protection in its latest September 2025 report. This is a significant decline, considering it previously scored ADVANCED+.
To its antivirus subscription packages, McAfee also includes some solid extras. There’s a built-in VPN, an Anti-Tracker tool to clean up cookies and temp files, and access to ID Protection through the McAfee Protection Center. You also get a performance boost option with App Boost, which is meant to speed things up while using specific apps.
The downsides of McAfee. The biggest downside for McAfee is poor real-time malware detection’s poor performance. Like Malwarebytes, it failed to detect any malware during the in-house testing.
