As NASA prepares to retire the ISS around 2030, a new generation of commercial space stations is emerging to take its place. Projects such as Orbital Reef, Starlab, Vast’s Haven concepts and inflatable stations like Thunderbird are all competing to define the future of human activity in orbit. Ageing systems, rising maintenance costs and safety limits mean NASA and its partners are planning a controlled deorbit of the station by the end of the decade. However, the agency is not building a direct replacement. Instead, NASA is shifting its strategy. Rather than owning and operating the next space station, it plans to purchase services from privately developed platforms. The company has already flown several private astronaut missions to the ISS, gaining experience in crew operations, training and logistics. More importantly, NASA selected Axiom to develop commercial modules that will attach directly to the existing station. This positions Axiom as a unique bridge between the ISS era and the next generation of commercial space stations. How Axiom Station Will Be Built Step 1: Attach to the ISS Axiom’s first module is scheduled to launch later this decade and dock with the ISS. Over time, additional modules (habitation, research and power elements) will be added. Together, they will form a growing segment attached to the station. During this phase, Axiom will rely partly on ISS infrastructure, including power and life-support systems. This approach allows the company to test its technology and begin operations while gradually building up its own capabilities. Step 2: Detach and Become Independent As the ISS nears retirement, the Axiom segment is designed to detach and continue operating as a standalone station. This “attach first, then detach” approach is a key differentiator. Unlike competing projects that must launch fully independent stations from the start, Axiom can evolve step-by-step. This reduces risk and enables a smoother transition. What Will Happen Onboard Axiom envisions its station as a multi-purpose orbital hub. It is designed to support national space agencies, private astronauts, research institutions and commercial customers. Planned activities include microgravity research, in-orbit manufacturing, Earth observation and technology demonstrations. At the same time, the station could host commercial missions, including media projects and space tourism. Because Axiom’s modules begin their life attached to the ISS, they offer a natural continuation for existing users. This allows experiments and operations to transition without major disruption. Why NASA Is Backing Axiom NASA’s partnership with Axiom reflects a broader shift in how the agency operates in low Earth orbit. By supporting commercial modules attached to the ISS, NASA can test a new model. In this model, the agency becomes a customer rather than the owner of orbital infrastructure. At the same time, Axiom’s gradual transition to an independent station provides a practical solution to one of NASA’s biggest concerns: avoiding a gap in access to orbit after the ISS is decommissioned. Challenges Ahead Despite its progress, Axiom Station still faces significant challenges. The company must integrate new hardware with a decades-old station, stay on a tight development schedule and prove that its business model can succeed in the long term. It is also competing in a crowded market, with multiple companies racing to establish commercial stations. Yet Axiom’s approach, building directly onto the ISS before breaking away, gives it a unique advantage. In many ways, it is the closest thing to a direct successor: a space station not built from scratch, but one that quite literally grows out of the ISS itself.
