Google is the latest Big Tech company to do layoffs this year.
Employees working at Google Cloud have been hit by cuts over the last two weeks, two people familiar with the matter told Business Insider.
One team, Google's Threat Intelligence Group, which is one of Google's top security units and regularly publishes research about hackers, was impacted yesterday, the people said. Some employees have been posting about the layoffs on LinkedIn.
The cuts were not limited to that unit, affecting others at Mandiant — a cybersecurity company bought by Google in 2022 — and within Google Cloud, the people added.

Tough news. Sending support to everyone affected — talented people land on their feet, and any team would be lucky to have them. 🙏

I believe these layoffs don't reflect a decline in demand, but rather a reallocation of resources by tech companies. To me, what truly matters isn't who's laying off employees, but who's attracting future talent and investment.

In large-scale apparel and sportswear organizations, similar restructuring often follows after acquisitions when overlapping capabilities in sourcing, analytics, or supply chain security are consolidated under tighter operating models. The immediate impact is rarely about demand, but about eliminating parallel systems that no longer justify their cost. Over time, the real test is whether those cuts preserve the depth of technical expertise needed to maintain product and operational resilience.
