Booking.com 2026 Accommodation Barometer Highlights European Hospitality Growth, Cybersecurity Gaps and Strategies Driving Travel and Tourism Recovery
Published on June 2, 2026
The Booking.com Accommodation Barometer, in its sixth year, has shown that 66% of accommodations in Europe anticipate positive growth within the next year and that 60% have an excellent economic condition. As per insights gathered through a survey of 1,240 executives from 24 markets, this report sheds light on how resilient the hotel industry is and how important it is in supporting the growth of the tourism industry in Europe. It shows that even though the sentiment of optimism is high, there are differences between large chains and independent accommodation providers, which offers an opportunity to grow further.
Economic Sentiment and Travel Market Dynamics
Overall economic confidence remains strong, with chains reporting more favorable conditions than independent properties (72% vs 55%). Shifts in occupancy and average daily rates (ADR) suggest a maturing market: 50% of accommodations report higher occupancy while ADR growth moderated slightly (40% in 2026 vs 43% in 2025). These trends indicate steady travel demand, with high-traffic periods supporting tourism growth in urban and leisure destinations, and enabling operators to refine pricing, marketing, and seasonal packages to meet evolving traveler expectations.

Cybersecurity Gaps Affect Smaller Operators
Cybersecurity is a growing concern, with 66% of European accommodations feeling prepared, yet a notable gap exists between large and small properties. 94% of large chains report adequate readiness, compared to only 60% of small accommodations. Smaller operators are less likely to implement staff training (49% vs 89%), IT audits (60% vs 89%), or engage specialist providers (62% vs 95%). These gaps can influence traveler confidence, particularly for international tourists booking online, highlighting the importance of investment in secure systems to sustain growth in cross-border travel.
Seasonal and External Disruption Challenges
Peak season brings potential disruptions such as extreme weather, transport strikes, and local construction, affecting both operations and traveler experience. 37% of accommodations cite climate-related events, and 32% highlight local disruptions, as major concerns. Despite these risks, off-season discounts (72%) and diversified distribution strategies (81% leveraging online platforms) help maintain occupancy and revenue, ensuring a steady flow of tourists year-round. Such strategies support regional tourism growth and allow smaller destinations to capture international visitors outside traditional peak periods.

Event-Driven Tourism Supports Travel and Hospitality
Leveraging event-driven tourism has emerged as a key strategy, with 50% of accommodations reporting benefits over the past year. 66% saw improved revenue per room, while 60% experienced increased bookings during low-demand periods. By attracting travelers for festivals, conferences, or sporting events, properties can offset seasonal dips and stimulate local tourism economies. This approach demonstrates how strategic event alignment can enhance overall travel and tourism growth, while supporting the broader hospitality sector across urban and rural destinations.
Driving Tourism Growth Through Diversified Marketing
Accommodations increasingly employ digital and traditional marketing channels to attract both domestic and international visitors. Online platforms remain the most effective, followed by social media, paid search, and email campaigns. By combining promotional packages, seasonal discounts, and targeted marketing, hotels can boost off-season bookings, expand cross-border travel demand, and strengthen tourism flows. These strategies enable small and mid-sized accommodations to compete with larger chains and capture a share of Europe’s growing travel market.

Implications for European Travel and Tourism
The Barometer shows that positive economic sentiment, combined with strategic cybersecurity, seasonal pricing, and event-driven tourism, underpins growth in travel and hospitality across Europe. Large chains lead in adoption of technology and resilience measures, while smaller operators must leverage partnerships, digital tools, and promotional strategies to stay competitive. These insights highlight opportunities to expand tourism revenues, hotel occupancy, and regional economic impact, particularly in destinations reliant on international visitors.
Supporting Long-Term Hospitality and Tourism Growth
Matthias Schmid, SVP Accommodations at Booking.com, emphasizes the report’s role in guiding accommodations through evolving market dynamics: “The 2026 European Accommodation Barometer shows a resilient industry adapting to changing traveler behaviors—from cybersecurity to climate risks and event-driven demand. Supporting all partners with insights and tools helps ensure sustainable travel and tourism growth, strengthens regional hospitality sectors, and positions Europe to meet the evolving expectations of global travelers.”

Outlook for the European Tourism Market
Indeed, the Accommodation Barometer indicates that the European tourism industry is robust and responsive to opportunities in terms of being ready to use its recovery in international tourism for diversified income generation and growth. The key focus areas will be cybersecurity measures, marketing during off-peak periods, and organizing events to promote tourism and maintain traveler trust and economic growth in the region. The closing of the performance gap between larger and smaller accommodation companies could increase cross-border movement and make Europe one of the world’s top tourist destinations.
