Fene Osakwe, chairman of the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council, has won the cybersecurity leader of the year 2026 at the Global Cyber Awards.
The awards attracted nominees from over 50 countries, including India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Greece, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States, China, and Malaysia.
Osakwe’s victory is considered historic, as he becomes the first Nigerian to receive the honour in the category.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, described the recognition as a “solid demonstration of the state’s efforts to give the cybersecurity battle the attention it deserves”.

“Our plan is for Lagos to be the global financial hub, and this requires a strong cybersecurity infrastructure — a dream which the council shares and pursues vigorously,” the governor said.
The cybersecurity leader of the year category recognises individuals who demonstrate leadership, measurable impact, and contributions to the growth of the cybersecurity industry, including mentorship and professional development.
Osakwe began his career at Deloitte in Lagos, where he built expertise in cybersecurity and risk management.

He has since become a globally recognised figure, leading cybersecurity for a multinational organisation listed on the New York Stock Exchange and advising corporate boards across multiple continents.
He currently serves as a professor of practice in cybersecurity and is an international speaker on digital trust, cyber governance, and national cyber resilience.
Under his leadership, the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council developed cybersecurity guidelines for businesses aimed at improving cyber hygiene, strengthening incident response, and aligning with global standards.
Osakwe is also involved in mentorship, supporting postgraduate students in cybersecurity at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and the University of Westminster.

The cybersecurity awards, established in 2014, recognises excellence and innovation in the cybersecurity industry, with winners selected independently based on merit.
