Detailsinfo
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in JDEGUEST Apache::API::Password up to 0.5.2 on Perl. Affected is the function Crypt::Urandom. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak prng vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-338. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) in a security context, but the PRNG's algorithm is not cryptographically strong. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Apache::API::Password versions through v0.5.2 for Perl can generate insecure random values for salts. The _make_salt and _make_salt_bcrypt methods will attept to load Crypt::URandom and then Bytes::Random::Secure to generate random bytes for the salt. If those modules are unavailable, it will simply return 16 bytes generated with Perl's built-in rand function. The rand function is unsuitable for cryptographic use. These salts are used for password hashing.
The advisory is shared for download at metacpan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-5088 since 03/28/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-22840).
